A massive thank you goes to everyone who made our Launch Party such a great success - it was a wonderful night jam packed with entertainment including live performances by Tom Chaplin from Keane, and Razorlight. Not forgetting Salon Privé’s spectacular array of the world’s most sought-after luxury cars mixed up with a little jive from the one and only Stavros Flatley!
Our auction was a great success, the cricket ball England used to destroy Australia in the second Ashes Test at Lord’s fetched £35,000 while a shirt and stump from the same match went for £20,000. SUNDAY READING...
Posted by PIERS MORGAN
Tuesday, July 21 - Freddie launched his new charity tonight, the AF Foundation, with a star-studded party at the prestigious Hurlingham Club, in Fulham.
During this year’s final of Britain’s Got Talent, I revealed to the audience how he’d texted me in the break asking if I could get the hilarious Stavros Flatley to perform tonight for him and they had readily agreed.
As the father-and-son Greek duo careered around the stage this evening – cheered on by an audience including Katherine Jenkins, Jimmy Nesbitt, Bruno Tonioli from Strictly Come Dancing, Christine Bleakley, and most of the England cricket team – I saw Freddie convulsed with laughter.
Later, I conducted a hilarious Q&A with him, England cricketers Andrew Strauss and Graeme Swann, Australian cricketing legend Shane Warne and golfer Lee Westwood.
They were all funny but Freddie was the star turn – cracking jokes about everything from pedalos to the Germans, taunting the Aussies, and urging everyone to ‘have a few beers and enjoy yourselves’. The audience roared after his every comment.
At midnight, Freddie’s dad Colin came over for a chat. ‘You seemed very emotional at Lord’s on that last day,’ I said.
‘I was,’ he agreed. ‘It suddenly dawned on me what Andrew had achieved in his career. I’ve always loved cricket, and to see my son bowling the Aussies out at Lord’s in his last Test there, well, that was very special.
‘As he walked off, someone grabbed my arm to congratulate me and I realised I had tears streaming down my face. Very embarrassing! But I just felt so very proud of him and I couldn’t hold it back.’
It was a stunningly successful night, with just the auction raising £230,000 for the Foundation. One generous bidder paying an astonishing £35,000 at the auction for the ball with which Freddie took his five wickets.
‘You should retire more often,’ I suggested.
‘Too right!’ he laughed.

OFF TO A FLYING START
Posted by AF Foundation
The launch party auction for Andrew and Rachael Flintoff’s AF Foundation for children raised almost £¼million.
The cricket ball England all-rounder Flintoff used to destroy Australia in the second Ashes Test at Lord’s fetched £35,000 while a shirt and stump from the same match went for £20,000.
The highest bid was one of £43,000 for a trip to Augusta for the 2010 US Masters including the chance to caddie for Ryder Cup hero Lee Westwood at the pre-tournament Par 3 competition.
Even auctioneer Lord Jeffrey Archer’s gavel was knocked down for £4,000 at a glittering gala dinner at the Hurlingham Club attended by a host of sporting and show business personalities including England captain Andrew Strauss, Shane Warne, James Nesbitt, Piers Morgan, Catherine Jenkins and Rory Bremner.
“I was amazed by everybody’s generosity,” said Flintoff. “It was a great evening and a wonderful way to launch the foundation”.
The AF Foundation is a children’s charity raising funds to build, develop and improve child rehabilitation and physiotherapy units throughout the UK.
“Our mission is to redesign and refurbish existing units, make them warm, child-friendly areas, supply state-of-the-art equipment that benefits both children and staff and maintain units once they are set up,” explained Flintoff’s wife Rachael.
The Flintoffs decided to act when they discovered that the rehab and physio departments within many of the children’s hospitals across the UK are often overlooked for funding.
“Most of these hospitals have highly skilled, specialised rehabilitation teams, but unfortunately the existing facilities from which they carry out their work, do not match this expertise. Facilities are tired and outdated, and provide a clinical rather than child-friendly environment in which to treat their young patients. Equipment is basic and some in desperate need of replacement,” said Flintoff.
